# @Minoa in Slack

> How the Minoa agent works in Slack, who can use it, and what permissions it needs

<Warning>
  The Minoa agent in Slack is in **beta** and available through early access. The permissions below cover the capabilities we are rolling out during the beta.
</Warning>

## Overview

The Minoa agent answers questions about your deals, accounts, and business cases directly in Slack, so your team does not have to switch to the Minoa app to get an answer. Ask it for a value hypothesis, the proof points behind a number, or a read on where a deal stands.

It runs on the same Minoa Slack app that sends [notifications](/pages/integrations/messaging/slack). A Slack admin installs it once from **Settings > Integrations**, and Slack shows the full list of permissions for approval before anything is granted.

<Note>
  **Minoa agent or Slackbot?** The Minoa agent is Minoa's own assistant — you talk to it directly with **@Minoa AI**. [Slackbot](/pages/integrations/ai-assistants/slack) is Slack's assistant, which can use Minoa as one of its sources. Both come with the same app and you can use either.
</Note>

## Where you can talk to it

| Where | How it works |
| - | - |
| Direct message | Send the agent a message and it replies. No mention needed. |
| In a channel | Invite **@Minoa AI**, then mention it. It then stays with that thread until the conversation moves on. |
| Anywhere | Type `/minoa` from any message box to start. |

In channels the agent only speaks up when someone mentions it. It will not join a conversation it was never invited into, and it does not reply to other bots.

To stop it, react with 🔕 on its last reply to mute it in that thread, or press **Stop** while a reply is being written.

## Who can use it

Only people who have a Minoa account can use the agent. Minoa connects the two accounts automatically by matching email addresses: if the email on someone's Slack profile matches the email on their Minoa account, they can use the agent. Minoa rechecks this regularly, so when someone is removed from Minoa they also lose access to the agent.

If someone without a Minoa account mentions the agent, it declines and points them to a Minoa admin. It does not answer their question or start following the thread.

Admins can see how many people are connected, and refresh the list, under **Settings > Integrations > Slack**.

## What it will not do

The agent is there for questions about deals, accounts, business cases, and value engineering. It turns down anything outside that.

It also declines requests to reveal its own instructions or configuration, to explain how Minoa stores or protects data, or to reach another Minoa customer's information. When that happens it replies with a short, fixed message instead of engaging, and it treats the rest of that conversation with extra care.

## Permissions

Slack asks your admin to approve the whole list at once. There is no way to accept some permissions and decline others, and Minoa does not offer a reduced version of the app.

Some permissions cover capabilities that are still rolling out during the beta. We ask for them up front so your workspace does not have to approve the app again each time one becomes available.

### Sending messages

| Slack permission | What it lets Minoa do |
| - | - |
| `chat:write` | Post and update messages, including replies as they stream |
| `im:write` | Open a direct message to send someone a notification |
| `users:read` | See the list of people in the workspace |
| `users:read.email` | Read email addresses, to connect Slack and Minoa accounts |

### Talking with the agent

| Slack permission | What it lets Minoa do |
| - | - |
| `app_mentions:read` | Know when someone mentions **@Minoa AI** |
| `assistant:write` | Appear as an AI app in Slack and offer suggested questions |
| `commands` | Receive the `/minoa` command |
| `channels:history`, `groups:history` | Read messages in the public and private channels it has been invited to |
| `channels:read`, `groups:read` | See channel names, topics, and how many people are in them |
| `im:history`, `im:read` | Read direct messages with the agent |
| `mpim:history`, `mpim:read` | Read group direct messages with the agent |
| `reactions:read`, `reactions:write` | See and add emoji reactions, including the 🔕 mute |

The agent only reads messages in conversations it has been invited to.

### Using a channel as context

| Slack permission | What it lets Minoa do |
| - | - |
| `channels:join` | Join a public channel when you attach it to a deal or account |
| `bookmarks:read`, `bookmarks:write` | Read a channel's bookmarks and keep a business case bookmark up to date |
| `canvases:read`, `canvases:write` | Read channel canvases and keep a business case summary canvas up to date |
| `pins:read` | Read pinned messages |
| `search:read.public` | Search public channels for background while answering a question |

Searching covers public channels only. Private channels and direct messages are never searched.

### Links and files

| Slack permission | What it lets Minoa do |
| - | - |
| `links:read`, `links:write` | Replace the plain preview of a Minoa link with a proper Minoa card |
| `files:read` | Read files shared in the conversations it has been invited to |
| `files:write` | Upload charts and PDFs into a conversation |

Slack only tells Minoa about shared links for the Minoa app's own address, `app.minoa.io`.

### Workspace

| Slack permission | What it lets Minoa do |
| - | - |
| `team:read` | Read basic workspace details such as the name and domain |
| `mcp:connect` | Let [Slackbot](/pages/integrations/ai-assistants/slack) reach Minoa and use its tools |

## Admin controls

All of these are in **Settings > Integrations > Slack**:

| Control | What it does |
| - | - |
| **Enable / disable** | Turns the integration off without uninstalling the Slack app |
| **Re-authenticate** | Approves permissions added since you first connected |
| **Update Slack user mapping** | Rechecks which Slack accounts belong to Minoa users |
| **Remove integration** | Disconnects the workspace and revokes Minoa's access |

<Info>
  If Slack grants fewer permissions than Minoa asked for — for example when your workspace requires admin approval for each one — some capabilities stay unavailable. An admin can fix this with **Re-authenticate**.
</Info>

## Data handling

Minoa keeps the agent's conversations so it can follow a thread across several messages and so admins can review what the agent said. When a message is deleted or edited in Slack, Minoa stops using the original wording.

Everything the Slack integration handles is covered by our [Data Processing Agreement](https://minoa.io/legal/dpa-eu) and [Privacy Policy](https://minoa.io/legal/privacy), including retention, deletion requests, and our commitment not to train models on your data.
